44 down, 8 to go

Title: Ramona Quimby, Age 8
Author: Beverly Cleary

While I’ve had fun trying to make my way through all Beverly Cleary books this year, I have to say… after awhile the schmaltzy world that Cleary creates gets to this cynical broad.

Cleary books are great for kids. They really are. And Ramona and her sister, Beezus, are quintessential kids. But after awhile, the stories all mesh together. I wanted them to get in more trouble than they do. I want them to sass back more than they do. In short, I want them to be kids like kids are today. And they just aren’t. And that’s part of their charm. But also part of why they may not relate to current children.

While I still have a boat load of Cleary books to get through, I think I’m going to put a hiatus on it for awhile.
